About the aircraft
The P-47 Thunderbolt was a large-scale fighter, developed and deployed by US Army Air Force during World War?. The P-47 was equipped with Pratt & Whitney's R-2800, 18-cylinder air-cooled radial engine producing 2000 hp, which was the most powerful engine in those days. With a turbocharger engine, the P-47 was able to attain a maximum speed of 690km/h. First flight was in May 1941. Since 1943, P-47 joined into the European War Theatre.
At first, missions of P-47 were for Allied Army's bomber escort, but transferred to attacking enemies on the ground when the new aircraft P-51 Mustangs were deployed as bomber escort. The P-47 continued that mission til end of the war. Refinements of Thunderbolt continued that led to the P-47D which was the most produced version with more than 12,000 built. As a much better solution for pilot visibility, P-47Ds were fitted with bubble canopy devised from Razor Back Canopy which was in poor visibility to the rear.
