【About Brabham BT52 1983 GP】
Brabham, founded by Australian racer Jack Brabham and racing car designer Ron Tauranac, made its entry into Formula 1 in 1962. In 1966-1967, Brabham won the Constructors' and Drivers' titles for two years in a row. After Brabham's retirement, Bernie Ecclestone became the new owner, and the genius Gordon Murray joined the team as the chief designer. Gordon Murray launched a series of innovative and highly competitive machines, and solidifying Brabham's position as one of the dominant teams in Formula 1.
The Brabham BT52 was developed with a new concept for the 1983 season, following the ban on the ground effect cars pioneered by Lotus. Its unique design, known as the "Arrow Shape", focused on minimizing air resistance and left a lasting impression. The engine of this BT52 was a compact BMW 1,499cc in-line 4-turbo, following the previous year's BT50. Its maximum output was said to be 850 horsepower. The team made various efforts to reduce aerodynamic drag and lighten the car, including a smaller fuel tank compared to other teams, assuming pit stops for refueling. The driver lineup consisted of ace Nelson Piquet and Riccardo Patrese, maintaining the same roster as the previous season. At the opening race, the Brazilian GP, Patrese retired, but Piquet secured the victory, showcasing the capabilities right from the beginning. Piquet continued to perform consistently, finishing second in Round 3 France and Round 5 Monaco, and consistently won most of the other races. In the second half of the season, even after the introduction of the improved version, the BT52B, the momentum did not stop. Piquet won the 13th round in Italy and the 14th round in Great Britain, and finished 3rd in the final round in South Africa. Nelson Piquet's remarkable performance led him to won the Drivers' Championship title for that year.
