About the Aircraft
The F-8 Crusader was the first supersonic carrier-based fighter for the U.S. navy in the late 1950s, also used by the French Navy. The F-8E (FN) was modified for operations from the small French carriers and serve aboard carriers Clemenceau and Foch. The F-8E (FN) stayed in service until 2000 as a fleet air defense fighter.
The French Crusader F-8E (FN), commissioned from 1964, was painted in gull gray similar to U.S. Navy aircraft initially, but shifted to blue-gray from the late 1980s. The Shark mouth marking was also seen on the aircraft dispatched during the Kosovo War in 1999.
