About the Aircraft
The N1K-J Shiden, code-named George by the Allies, was an Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service's Land-based fighter modification of the original floatplane fighter N1K Kyoufu. Shiden was refinement of Kyoufu, and especially its wings were moved to lower position. The N1K2-J variant was named the Shiden-Kai with Kai meaning modified. It first flew in January 1944 and was officially adopted in January 1945.
With Homare 21 engine, the N1K2-J Shiden-Kai possessed heavy armament as well as surprisingly good maneuverability, and was faster than its predecessor. The Shiden-Kai proved to be one of the best dogfighting aircraft against the late-war Allied fighters during WW?.
